Third grade writers have been writing stories about their lives. They are collecting notebook entries about many of the funny, happy, frustrating, sad and wonderful moments in their lives. They have been challenged to "zoom in" on one small moment instead of telling a larger story. Topics that are too broad often lack specific detail and end up sounding more like lists than stories. (For example, instead of writing about an entire trip to Canobie Lake Park, a third grade writer would be encouraged to write about a fun or interesting experience on one ride.) When children have difficulty zooming in, I have encouraged them to ask themselves, "What's one thing that happened…" and ask again, "What's one thing that happened…" They should ask themselves that question until they have a focused topic. As children write their focused topic, they work to include true, exact details from the movie they create in their mind.
