Third grade readers are working to notice when they read difficult words and work to solve them using one or more of the following strategies:
*Chunk the word
*Think about the story (picture what’s going on)
*Ask yourself, “Does this look like a word I know?”
*Ask yourself, “Does this sound like a word I know?”
*Try out the different sounds the letters can make
*Search for clues in the text to figure out what words mean
*Use context clues to figure out which noun a pronoun represents
*Work out figurative language phrases using the text to help
